The Blank Classroom…
Why This Empty Space Means Everything
There’s something sacred about a room that’s been completely cleared—walls bare, desks stacked, and the final goodbyes still echoing in the room. After a year filled with parent calls, grading marathons, staff meetings, hallway duty, and heart-to-hearts with students, it can feel almost surreal to walk into silence and stillness.
But this moment—this blank canvas—is one of my favorites.
It’s the sweet spot between endings and beginnings.
The classroom isn’t full of noise or mess or stress.
It’s not yet filled with new supplies, new plans, or new names.
It’s just… open.
And you made it here.
You poured yourself into every bulletin board or display, every feedback comment, every late-night plan. You managed expectations, advocated for your students, supported your colleagues, and still showed up day after day with care, resilience, and intention.
This is your breath before the next beginning.
What I Do in This Space
– Take a quiet moment to sit in the student chair by the window
– Pause to think of a few memories from the year that made me smile
– Snap a photo—not just for the aesthetic, but to remember what we did here
– Jot down a few things I want to repeat next year, and a few I want to change
Whether your classroom is already packed up or you’re still deep in the final push, I hope you find a minute to soak in this space. You’ve earned it.
And when you’re ready to ease back into planning mode—just a little—here are a few of my favorite tools to help you start fresh:
